Here's a new way to enjoy Central Florida's temperate winter weather: Tour Mount Dora lakes on a tiny two-seater boat.
A company called CatBoat Tours of Mount Dora leads tours around the Harris Chain of Lakes on cute, easy-to-operate little CraigCat boats.
This is SO MUCH FUN.
You reserve your spot on line, at $65 per person. Then you meet at Mount Dora's public boat ramp at the appointed time.
The owner, David Seidel, equips you with a life vest and a walkie-talkie-like gadget through which you'll hear his tour later, and settles you into the cute little pontoon-like miniboat.
Then, the boats--five or so--get in a line on the water and scoot over Dora Lake. Every so often, Dave gets onto the walkie-talkie and tells you what you're seeing. The audio isn't clear; the only flaw I found with this entire experience is that I couldn't hear him well. I'm sure he'll get better audio equipment at some point.
Then you reach Dora Canal, which is rich with greenery, native birds, and other scenic elements.
Once you're out of the canal, you play around more lakes, spotting mansions, alligators, and leisure boaters.
Along the way, Dave snaps your photo. He'll send you the images afterward.
After two-plus hours, you head back to dock.
Honestly, this is one of the most fun adventures I've had in Florida. I highly recommend CatTours of Mount Dora.
